Children are entitled to 15 hours of Government funding from the term following their 3rd birthday, in some cases this can be extended to 30 hours.  This funding is flexible and can be used for a mixture of mornings, afternoons and full days.  It can also be used for more than one setting.  We welcome childcare vouchers.

We accept children from 2 years old and are registered for a maximum of 26 per session.

As an Early Years Provider, The Leighs Nursery Group deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The EYFS covers legislative welfare requirements and provides detailed information for practitioners on supporting children’s learning and development.  A full copy is available to view at each setting.

The aims of the Nursery Group

  • To provide a safe, interesting and stimulating environment in which to form new relationships outside of the home.
  • To encourage the children to progress through the early learning goals as described in the EYFS (2021).

For more information on the EYFS and Every Child Matters please see a member of staff.

A guide to session activities

  • Upon entering the nursery your child will find (with your help) their name card that they will then pass to a member of staff once fully inside the setting.  This is self registration and it encourages the children to recognise their name and think about keeping safe.  All sessions begin with registration and a head count to ensure that every child is accounted for.
  • A range of activities and resources carefully planned to inspire interest and match your child’s interests will be available for the children to access.  This is free play and it facilitates learning through play.  An adult initiated activity is also planned for every session, which has specific aims as detailed on the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  • Snack bar is provided where the children are encouraged to independently access a selection of healthy/multi cultural food and drink (with adult support if necessary) after washing hands.
  • We encourage the children to join in tidy up time and to put away the resources they have been playing with at the end of the session.
  • We have group time where we share a book, sing songs and share news from outside of the Nursery.  We also have a book sharing scheme where the children choose a book from Nursery to take home and share with their parent/carer.
  • Then to lunch after washing hands (morning sessions).  In the afternoon session lunch follows registration.

Lunch is provided by parents/carers. The lunch box must be named and contain a sensible diet that can be consumed in a limited time.  Parents/carers are asked not to include nuts.  Children will not be allowed to share their lunches to minimize risk of allergic reactions.  We feel it’s advisable to include an ice pack.

The Leighs Nursery Group has a Key Person approach; this means a member of staff will be assigned to your child to act as an emotional and educational support.  All members of staff have an equal duty of care for your child and because of this your child may develop an attachment to a different member off staff, in this case the Key Person approach is flexible and your Key Person can be changed.   Your Key Person will also act as a point of contact for you, so that you can share any details of your child’s development or news from outside of Nursery.

We encourage you to bring your child to visit us during any session, so that he or she can develop a familiarity with the nursery and staff.  During the term before your child commences with us we will hold an induction session.  This is a short session with resources in place to give your child the opportunity to visit and explore.    Whilst your child explores you will have the opportunity to complete your child’s file, this contains information about allergies or illnesses, contact numbers and address and emergency contacts and permission forms for photos and sharing information etc.  We will also need to see your child’s birth certificate and record the birth certificate number in your child’s pack. These files are confidential and are stored in a locked filing cabinet.

On your first session with us you will need:

  • Lunch in a clearly named container including a drink and ice pack.
  • Appropriate weather proof clothing; raincoat and wellies in rainy weather, sun hat and applied sun block in sunny weather etc all clearly named.
  • Your child’s book bag, all the children enjoy participating in book sharing.
  • A spare set of clothes, in case of spillages etc.
  • For nappy users: nappies, wipes and spare clothes.
  • Any comforter or special toy to aid settling in.

A “precious box” is provided for children to store their special toys and the children have free access to it.

You will appreciate that sometimes a child will want their belongings quickly so large clear naming is very useful.

Safeguarding

Full policies and procedures are available for your perusal but please be aware that we are required by law to report any concerns regarding your child’s welfare.  Whilst any child is in our care we have a duty to keep them safe.  We will listen to every child and take what they say seriously.
Any concerns will be reported to our safeguarding coordinator who will deal with our concerns appropriately and confidentially.

Confidentiality

The Nursery’s work with children will sometimes bring us into contact with confidential information.  We would like to reassure parents/carers that strict confidence will be maintained as described in our Policies and Procedures.

Illness

If your child becomes ill during a session we will contact you and request that you collect them as soon as possible. We recommend that if your child is ill they stay at home where appropriate care can be provided to facilitate a speedy recovery.  If your child has sickness or diarrhoea we ask that you keep them at home until 48 hours after the last episode has passed.

Medication

To ensure your child’s health is maintained throughout the nursery period it is important that the nursery is informed and advised of any medication, treatment, allergies etc that may affect your child.  Prescribed medication may be administered in the setting with reason and once we have written permission from the parent/carer in our medication book.  This book has detailed instructions of when to administer and dosage etc and must be signed by the parent/carer. Two members of staff will log the time and date of administering along with both of their signatures.

Our staff is trained in first aid and will be vigilant in looking after your children.
